Techno Talespinning

Technology is undoubtedly changing the face of journalism in both Australia, and the world.

As there was no one to do a seminar for this week, Christina lead a discussion about the topic in class.

One of the discussion points that she raised was the question of whether we control the technology, or whether technology actually controls us.

I think we as a society have gotten so used to constantly using technology that we are lost without it when it isn't available.

Brooke raised the example of the long power outages we experienced during the floods in Newcastle.

Without technology, we can survive but it does make it difficult to have the same standard of living that we usually enjoy!

The text chapter "The media is the message" by Suellen Tapsall is noticeably out of date.

She says:
"How likely is it that the average journalist of 2010 will be a multi-skilled,
multiple-media performer, individually delivering high-quality and effective
text, sound, vision, and on-line copy for a global audience? More importantly,
how desirable is this vision of the future newsroom?"
Ummm very likely??

I think the average journalist of 2007 is already at this level.

When we interviewed Lucia Hill, ABC Local Radio producer, she spoke about her role as a modern media professional.

She has to not only provide content for on-air sound delivery but also provide sound pieces for posting on the web, as well as images and copy.

As for the desirablility of this situation?

Technology has meant that the way a journalist does their job is different now compared to the pre-digital era.

The advantages and disadvantages could be argued all day, but overall, i think the internet has had a positive impact on the role of the journalist.

Although they may now feel more threatened by the citizen journalists (the bloggers), journalists are being given more opportunities to spread their messages through the community.

If a journalist is practicing good, empathetic, ethical, responsible journalism that is as free from any bias as is possible, all the more power to her for success in these technological times.
